Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing: 2023 Tundra and Sequoia Recalled for Spare Tire Detachment Risk

Summary

Toyota is recalling approximately 1,398 of its 2023 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, and Sequoia Hybrid vehicles. The steel chain that secures the spare tire to the underside of the vehicle may have an insufficient weld that can break, potentially causing the spare tire to fall off the vehicle while driving. Owners will be able to have their spare tire carrier assembly replaced by a dealer at no cost.

Risk

An improperly welded chain can snap, causing the heavy spare tire to detach from the vehicle. This creates a road hazard for other drivers and significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle records or registration to see if you own a 2023 Toyota Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, or Sequoia Hybrid.
  2. Contact a local Toyota dealer to schedule an appointment for a free replacement of the spare tire carrier assembly.
  3. If you have questions, contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and reference recall number 23TB06/23TA06.
  4. For additional information, you may call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
