Summary

Southern Seed & Feed has recalled approximately 1,250 bags (50 lbs each) of Triple Cleaned Corn because samples were found to contain Fumonisin levels exceeding the recommended limit of 5 parts per million. Fumonisin is a toxin produced by certain molds that can lead to serious illness or death in livestock and other animals. This recall specifically involves two shipments delivered to Alabama in early March 2014. Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Risk

The corn contains elevated levels of Fumonisin, a mycotoxin that can cause fatal brain disease in horses (leukoencephalomalacia) and severe respiratory distress in swine. Consumption of contaminated feed poses a significant health risk to animals depending on the species and the amount ingested.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your animal feed inventory for 50-pound bags labeled as Triple Cleaned Corn, packaged by Southern Seed and Feed, Macon, MS.
  2. Verify if your product was part of the shipments delivered on March 4, 2014, or March 7, 2014.
  3. Immediately stop feeding the affected corn to any livestock, horses, or other animals.
  4. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Southern Seed & Feed at 5023 Magnolia Dr, Macon, Mississippi, for further instructions.
  5. For additional questions, contact the FDA's consumer complaint coordinator for your region.
