Summary

New Flyer of America is recalling approximately 246 battery electric transit buses, specifically certain 2021-2023 XE35, 2021-2023 XE40, and 2023 XE60 models. A software error can cause these buses to accelerate unexpectedly during certain driving conditions, which could lead to a crash. New Flyer will provide a free software update to correct the issue and began notifying owners by mail in February 2024.

Risk

A software malfunction can trigger unintended acceleration while the bus is in operation. This loss of speed control significantly increases the risk of a collision with other vehicles or pedestrians.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your transit bus is affected by checking the model and year: 2021-2023 XE35, 2021-2023 XE40, or 2023 XE60 battery electric transit buses.
  2. Contact New Flyer customer service at 1-800-241-2947 to schedule a free software update to resolve the acceleration error. Reference New Flyer recall number R23-023.
  3. If you have additional questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
