Summary

Snow Peak is recalling about 220 Japanese Axe M units because the wooden handle can crack during use, causing the heavy metal axe head to come loose. This defect was identified after the company received three reports of cracked handles or loose heads. The axes were sold at outdoor equipment retailers like Adventure 16, Backcountry Gear LTD, and Snow Peak Portland, as well as online, between December 2013 and August 2014. Consumers should immediately stop using the axe and contact the company for a free replacement.

Risk

If the maple handle cracks, the 2-pound axe head can detach or fly off during a swing, potentially hitting the user or a bystander and causing serious impact or deep cut injuries.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your axe for the specific item number R-061, which is printed on the back page of the original manual provided with the product.
  2. Verify the physical characteristics: the axe should have a 14-inch light-colored maple handle with a small black snowflake (asterisk) symbol burnt into the wood near the hanging hole, and a black axe head measuring 5-3/4 inches high by 4 inches wide.
  3. Immediately stop using the recalled Japanese Axe M.
  4. Return the axe to the Snow Peak Portland retail store or contact Snow Peak toll-free at 855-407-8390 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday to receive a free replacement axe.
  5. You can also email recall@snowpeak.com or visit www.snowpeak.com and click on the recall poster for further instructions.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this safety recall.
