SmartPool Recalls Pool Alarms Due to Failure to Alert Consumers

Summary

SmartPool is recalling about 1,600 PE12 PoolEye submersible swimming pool alarms because the ON/OFF activation switch is reversed. This defect can cause the alarm to fail to sound if a child enters the water, potentially leading to a drowning incident. These gray alarms were sold at retailers including Family Leisure, Target, and Walmart between June 2016 and July 2016. Consumers can receive a free replacement alarm by contacting SmartPool.

Risk

The reversed activation switch means the alarm may be off when a user believes it is on, preventing it from sounding if a child falls into the pool. While no injuries have been reported, this failure compromises a critical safety layer intended to prevent drownings.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you have the PE12 PoolEye submersible pool alarm by checking for 'PoolEye' printed on the front of the siren and 'PE12' printed on the instruction manual.
  2. Check the product packaging for UPC code 628208165125 to confirm it is part of the recall.
  3. Immediately contact SmartPool toll-free at 888-560-7665 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or via email at info@smartpool.com, to request a free replacement alarm.
  4. Visit www.smartpool.com and click on the 'PE12 Recall' link on the homepage for additional information and instructions.
  5. Always provide constant adult supervision for children in and around water, even when a pool alarm is installed.
  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
