Summary

Siemens has recalled approximately 57,000 Q-series wall-mounted temperature and humidity sensors used in schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings. These sensors, sold between June 2007 and August 2012, can overheat, which has already led to four reported fires. The affected units come in three designs—blank, with a display, or with a display and door—and are available in white or beige. Siemens is providing free replacement sensors to all affected customers and will handle the installation.

Risk

The internal components of the sensors can overheat when connected to an AC power source, posing a fire risk. Four incidents of overheating and fires have been reported in school and hospital settings.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your wall-mounted sensors are the recalled Q-series models by looking for the Siemens, Talon, Staefa Control System, or Staefa Control System/Talon logo.
  2. To confirm the specific model number, look at the circuit board inside the unit for any of these codes: QAA 2060, QAA 2063, QAA 2072, QAA 2073, QFA 2000, QFA 2001, QFA 2060, QFA 2071, QFA 2072, QFA 3000, QFA 3001, QFA 3060, QFA 3071, or SB1-0834.
  3. Determine if the sensors are currently operating on an AC power source; if they are, immediately have a qualified technician convert them to a DC power source to mitigate the immediate fire risk.
  4. Contact Siemens at 800-516-9964 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday to schedule the installation of a free replacement sensor.
  5. Visit the Siemens website at http://w3.usa.siemens.com/buildingtechnologies and navigate to the Product Safety Recall section for more information.
  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.

Your Remedy Options
