Summary

Shimano is recalling approximately 6,600 disc brake calipers in the U.S. and an additional 704 in Canada because the calipers can fail, which may prevent the brakes from working properly. This recall includes the BR-CX75 aftermarket calipers and the BR-R515 model which was installed on bicycles from manufacturers like BMC, Giant, Ibis, Raleigh, Shinola, Specialized, and Volagi. Affected units were sold at bicycle specialty stores and dealers nationwide between February 2012 and May 2013. Shimano will provide a free replacement and installation of the brake calipers.

Risk

The brake calipers can fail during use, which prevents the cyclist from being able to stop or slow down effectively. This failure creates a collision hazard that can lead to crashes and serious physical injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop riding bicycles equipped with the recalled Shimano disc brake calipers.
  2. Check the outside of your brake calipers for the model numbers BR-CX75 or BR-R515, along with the words 'Shimano' and 'China' which are embossed into the metal. The calipers are available in either black or silver finishes.
  3. If you identify your brakes as part of this recall, contact a Shimano authorized dealer to schedule a free installation and replacement of the calipers.
  4. For additional information, contact Shimano American at (800) 353-4719 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or visit www.shimano.com and click on the '2013: Updated Voluntary Recall by Shimano' link.
