Shark Vacuum Cleaners Recalled by Euro-Pro Due to Shock Hazard

Summary

Euro-Pro is recalling approximately 142,000 Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away series upright vacuum cleaners. The aluminum wand can unexpectedly disconnect from the vacuum handle while the unit is still powered on, leaving the metal parts energized with electricity. The company has received 62 reports of the wand disconnecting, though no injuries have been reported. These vacuum cleaners were sold in maroon and purple colors at major retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and Best Buy between August 2014 and March 2015. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled vacuums and contact Euro-Pro for a free replacement wand.

Risk

If the aluminum wand detaches from the handle while the vacuum is plugged in, the exposed metal can remain live with electricity. This poses a significant risk of electric shock to anyone who touches the energized wand or handle connection.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the model number printed on a silver sticker on the upper right-hand corner of the back of the vacuum unit. Recalled models include NV650W, NV651, NV652, and NV660.
  2. Verify the date code, which is stamped onto one of the metal prongs of the power plug in a 4-digit WWYY (Week/Year) format. Affected units have codes starting with 48 or lower and ending in 14 (e.g., 3614).
  3. Inspect the plastic cuff that holds the aluminum wand. If there is a dimple or a green circle sticker on the outside of this cuff, your vacuum has already been inspected and is NOT included in this recall.
  4. Immediately stop using the vacuum cleaner if it matches the recalled model numbers and date codes.
  5. Contact Euro-Pro toll-free at 877-593-5140 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET Monday through Saturday, or 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, or visit www.sharkrecall.com to register for a free replacement wand.
  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
