General Motors, LLC: Chevrolet Spark and Spark EV Recalled for Secondary Hood Latch Corrosion

Summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 120,688 Chevrolet Spark and Spark EV vehicles from the 2013-2015 model years. The secondary hood latch in these vehicles can corrode at the pivot point, which may prevent the latch from engaging properly to hold the hood down. This recall expands upon a previous 2014 recall for the same issue, and even vehicles that were fixed during the first recall must be brought in for this new repair. Dealers will replace both the hood striker assembly and the hood latch assembly with improved parts at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the secondary hood latch fails due to corrosion, the vehicle's hood could unexpectedly fly open while driving. This can block the driver's view of the road and significantly increase the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected: This recall specifically includes 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Spark EV models.
  2. Check your vehicle's history: Even if your vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA recall 14V-593, you must have this new repair (GM recall A222359300) performed as the previous fix was insufficient.
  3. Contact a local Chevrolet dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the hood striker and hood latch assemblies replaced.
  4. For further information or to confirm your vehicle's status, contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and mention GM recall number A222359300.
  5. If you have additional questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
