Summary

Seattle Manufacturing Corporation (SMC) has recalled approximately 165 Kobah Ice Axes because the head or the bottom spike can detach from the handle during use. This defect poses a serious risk of injury or falls for climbers. These orange axes were sold at specialty climbing shops on the West Coast and through SMC's website between March and June 2019. Consumers should stop using the axes immediately and contact SMC for a full refund.

Risk

If the axe head or spike detaches while a climber is using the tool for support or self-arrest, it can cause the climber to lose their grip or balance, leading to a dangerous fall. One report has been received of the spike detaching from the handle.

  2. Check your ice axe handle for the name 'Kobah', the 'SMC' logo, and Manufacturer's Lot Number (MLN) 10864 printed on the shaft to see if it is included in this recall.
  3. Identify if your axe is one of the affected lengths: 60 cm, 65 cm, 70 cm, or 75 cm.
