BMW of North America, LLC: Luxury SUVs Recalled for Seat Belt Malfunction and Restraint Issues

Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 3,256 vehicles including various 2024 XM and 2025 X5, X6, X7, and Alpina XB7 models due to a seat belt system defect. The system may incorrectly detect that passengers are buckled when they are not, which prevents the seat belt warning light from turning on. This malfunction can also cause the supplemental restraint system (airbags) to deploy incorrectly during a collision. BMW dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts as necessary at no cost to the owner.

Risk

If the seat belt system fails to recognize an unbelted passenger, it may not trigger the safety warning light and could cause the airbags to deploy with the wrong force or timing. This failure to provide intended crash protection significantly increases the risk of injury during an accident.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's identification to see if it is one of the affected models: 2024 BMW XM, or 2025 BMW X5 (sDrive40i, xDrive40i, M60i, M, xDrive50e), X6 (xDrive40i, M60i, M), X7 (xDrive40i, M60i), and Alpina XB7.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free inspection and, if necessary, a replacement of the front seat lower seat belts.
