BMW of North America, LLC: Various BMW Vehicles Recalled for Faulty Seat Belt Audio Warnings

Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 144 vehicles because the seat belt warning system may fail to play an audible chime to alert the driver to fasten their seat belt. This recall affects various 2019-2022 models including the 330i, M340i, 430i, M440i, and 228i xDrive Gran Coupe. Because the system does not properly alert the driver, these vehicles fail to meet federal safety standards for occupant crash protection. BMW dealers will update the receiver audio module software to correct the issue at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the vehicle fails to provide an audible chime, a driver may forget to fasten their seat belt, which significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your model and year: 2019-2022 330i, 330i xDrive, or M340i; 2022 430i Coupe; 2021-2022 430i or M440i Convertible; or 2020-2022 228i xDrive Gran Coupe.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free software update for your vehicle's receiver audio module.
  3. If you have already received a notification letter (mailed around October 12, 2023), follow the instructions provided to arrange your repair.
  4. For further information or questions, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more details.
