Summary

Approximately 125,200 bicycles from Scott and Trek are being recalled because the SR Suntour front fork can break during use. This recall affects 13 Scott models and 11 Trek models from model years 2011, 2012, and 2013, which were sold at bicycle stores nationwide for between $450 and $1,370. Trek has received 28 reports of broken forks resulting in five injuries, including broken bones and a separated shoulder, while Scott has received one report of a broken fork. Owners of recalled Scott bicycles should receive a free repair or replacement lower fork, and Trek owners should receive a free repair or replacement depending on the specific fork model.

Risk

The front fork, which connects the front wheel to the frame and handles steering, can suddenly fracture or break. If the fork fails while the bicycle is in motion, the rider can lose control and crash, leading to serious injuries such as broken bones and shoulder dislocations.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled Scott or Trek bicycles until they have been inspected and repaired.
  2. For Scott bicycles, check the main frame for the model name and the outer sides of the front fork for the model names 'NEX' or 'NCX'.
  3. For Trek bicycles, check the top tube for the model name and the outer sides of the front fork for the names 'NEX', 'NRX', 'XCM', or 'XCT'. If the fork is an NRX, it must have 'IS mounts'.
  4. If you own a Trek bicycle, check the serial number located on the frame under the bottom bracket; if it ends in 'F', 'G', or 'H', it must be inspected by a dealer.
  5. Take recalled Scott bicycles to an authorized Scott dealer for a free repair of NEX forks or a free replacement lower fork for NCX models. Contact Scott USA toll-free at (888) 607-8365 or visit www.scott-sports.com and click 'Safety and Recalls'.
  6. Take recalled Trek bicycles to an authorized Trek dealer for a free repair of NEX, XCM, and XCT models or a free replacement of the NRX model. Contact Trek at (800) 373-4594 or visit www.trekbikes.com and click 'Safety and Recalls' under Owner Resources.
  7. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
