Blue Bird Body Company: All American and Vision School Buses Recalled for Unintended Reverse Speed

Summary

Blue Bird Body Company is recalling 419 of its 2018-2021 All American and Vision school buses equipped with PowerDrive 7000 electric drive systems. The System Control Module (SCM) in these buses may incorrectly activate the anti-rollback feature when the vehicle is in reverse on a downhill slope without the brake pedal applied. This defect can cause the school bus to reverse much faster than the driver expects, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will provide a free software calibration update to fix the issue.

Risk

The vehicle's control module may trigger a feature intended to prevent rolling, which instead forces the bus to accelerate backward at unexpected speeds while on a decline. This sudden and unintended speed increase while in reverse can cause the driver to lose control or strike objects or pedestrians, leading to a collision.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is a 2018-2021 Blue Bird All American or Vision School Bus equipped with the PowerDrive 7000 electric drive system.
  2. Contact a Blue Bird dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the System Control Module (SCM) software calibration updated.
  3. If you have questions, contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242 and reference recall number R23CG (SB).
