Schneider Electric Recalls Square D Safety Switches Due to Electrical Shock Hazard

Summary

Schneider Electric is recalling approximately 1,079,000 Square D brand General Duty 30 & 60A NEMA 3R safety switches. These gray metal boxes are used to shut off power in commercial buildings, outbuildings, and homes. The recall was initiated because the power can remain on even when the handle is moved to the "OFF" position, creating a severe danger of electric shock or electrocution. These units were sold nationwide at stores like Home Depot and Lowe's between January 2014 and January 2018.

Risk

The internal switching mechanism can fail to disconnect power when the external handle is switched to the 'OFF' position. This means live electricity may still be flowing through the circuit when a user believes it is safe to perform maintenance, posing a direct risk of electrocution.

What You Should Do

  1. Locate the safety switch box and check the label on the side for the following catalog numbers: CD321NRB, D211NRB, D211NRBCP, D221NRB, D221NRBCP, D221NRBUP, D321NRB, D321NRBCP, D321NRBUP, DU221RB, DU221RBUP, DU222RB, DU222RBUP, DU321RB, DU321RBUP, DU321RBCP, DU322RB, DU322RBCP, or DU322RBUP.
  2. Check the front label to confirm it is a Square D brand General Duty switch marked as 30 or 60 Ampere and 120/240-volt or 240-volt.
  3. Identify the date code (YYWW format) on the inside of the cover; recalled units have codes ranging from 1401 (Year 2014, Week 1) through 1803 (Year 2018, Week 3). Note: Do not attempt to open the cover if you are not qualified to work around live electrical equipment.
  4. Immediately inspect installed switches by moving the handle to 'OFF'. If the power stays on, contact Schneider Electric at 877-672-1953 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at www.schneider-electric.us/gdss-safetyalert for a free replacement and free professional installation.
  5. If the safety switch is part of the recall but not yet installed, do not install it; contact Schneider Electric at 877-672-1953 to receive a free replacement switch.
  6. For additional questions or safety concerns, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
