Summary

Approximately 15 million APC 7 and 8 series SurgeArrest surge protectors are being recalled because they can overheat, smoke, and melt. There have been 700 reports of these units overheating, leading to 55 claims of property damage including major fires causing over $1.6 million in combined damage to a home and medical facility. 13 injuries have been reported, including smoke inhalation and contact burns. Consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the affected units and contact Schneider Electric for a free replacement.

Risk

The internal components of the surge protector can fail and overheat, causing the plastic casing to smoke and melt. This poses a significant fire hazard to the home or facility and a risk of burn injuries to anyone who touches the overheated device.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the bottom of your APC surge protector for a label containing the model and serial numbers.
  2. Identify if your unit is part of the recall by checking the model number. Affected 7 Series models include: NET7, NET7T, NET7T-C, PER7, PER7C, PER7T, PER7T-CO, PER7T-U, PER7TX137, PER7-U, PER7X148, PRF7, PRF7T, PRO7, PRO7C, PRO7T, and PRO7TX183.

  4. Check the serial number to confirm the manufacture date. Locate the first one or two letters; the following two numbers indicate the year. If the numbers are 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01, or 02, your unit is recalled.
  5. Immediately stop using the recalled surge protector and unplug it from the wall outlet.
