Summary

Samsung has expanded its recall to include all Galaxy Note7 smartphones, totaling approximately 1.9 million units, because the lithium-ion batteries can overheat and catch fire. This expanded recall includes original devices as well as the replacement phones provided during the initial September 2016 recall. Samsung has received 96 reports of these batteries overheating in the U.S., resulting in 13 reports of burns and 47 reports of property damage. The phones were sold nationwide at wireless carriers and electronic stores like AT&T, Best Buy, and Verizon between August and October 2016 for approximately $850 to $890.

Risk

The internal lithium-ion battery can experience a thermal failure, causing the phone to overheat, smoke, or catch fire. This poses a severe risk of fire to the surroundings and serious burn injuries to consumers using or carrying the device.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using and power down your Samsung Galaxy Note7 device, even if it was a replacement unit provided after the September 15, 2016 recall.
  2. Check your device for identification: the phone has a 5.7-inch screen and was sold in Black Onyx, Blue Coral, Gold Platinum, and Silver Titanium. Look for 'Samsung' printed on the top front and 'Galaxy Note7' printed on the back.
  3. Note that any Galaxy Note7 with a green battery icon is included in this recall, regardless of when it was purchased or its IMEI number.
  4. Contact the wireless carrier (such as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, or Verizon), retail outlet, or Samsung.com where you purchased the device to receive a full refund or a free exchange for a different device plus financial incentives.
  5. If you purchased your phone from a source other than a major carrier or retailer, contact Samsung directly at 844-365-6197 or visit www.samsung.com/us/note7recall to arrange a remedy.
  6. For additional questions or safety information, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
