Summary

Safety 1st is recalling approximately 183,000 Sure Fit toilet locks and 685,000 cabinet slide locks because children can unexpectedly open them. These locks are failing to provide the intended safety barrier, which has led to 388 total reports of the locks failing to secure lids or cabinets. Affected units were sold at major retailers including Amazon.com, Target, Walmart, and Home Depot between January 2000 and April 2012. Consumers should immediately remove these locks and contact Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) for a free replacement of a different model.

Risk

Children can disengage the locks, leading to drowning risks from toilet water or serious injury from accessing dangerous household items or chemicals stored in cabinets. One 13-month-old child was hospitalized after swallowing toxic beads from a cabinet where the lock failed.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the back of your Safety 1st locks to identify if they are affected models: Sure Fit toilet locks with model numbers 48003 or 48103, or cabinet slide locks with model numbers 12013 or 12014.
  2. Immediately stop using and remove the recalled locks from your toilets and cabinets.
  3. Once the locks are removed, immediately move all dangerous items (such as chemicals, medications, or small choking hazards) to a location that is completely out of reach of children and secure bathrooms to prevent unsupervised access.
  4. Contact Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) toll-free at (877) 416-8105 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.djgusa.com to request a free replacement lock of a different model.
  5. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
