Oliver Fiberglass Products and NuWhirl Systems are recalling about 6,400 Safe Step walk-in hydro-massage bath tubs with heated seats because the seat can get stuck in the "on" position. If a towel or other item covers the seat while the tub is empty, the seat can overheat and pose a burn hazard. There have been 11 reports of the seat getting stuck in the "on" position, including one report of the seat becoming hot to the touch. These tubs were sold by various home improvement and construction companies nationwide between January 2014 and September 2014 for between $12,000 and $15,000.
The heated seat mechanism can malfunction and remain active indefinitely; when covered by a towel or left unattended while empty, it can reach dangerously high temperatures that could cause burns to a consumer sitting on the seat.
Consumers should not put a towel or other item on the seat and contact Oliver Fiberglass for new instructions and warning stickers to place on the tubs. Oliver Fiberglass is contacting tub owners directly.
