Rocky Mountain Recalls Bicycles with Front Disc Brakes to Replace Quick Release Lever Due to Crash Hazard

Summary

Rocky Mountain is recalling approximately 17,300 bicycles with front disc brakes from model years 2003 through 2016. The front wheel’s quick-release lever can open too far and get caught in the front disc brake rotor while riding. These bicycles were sold nationwide and online at various retailers including Bikes.com, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Performance Bike from May 2002 through April 2016 for between $250 and $15,000. Owners can get a free replacement quick-release lever installed at any authorized retailer.

Risk

If the quick-release lever opens and contacts the disc brake rotor, the front wheel can suddenly lock up or detach from the frame. This can cause the rider to lose control and crash, posing a significant risk of serious injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your Rocky Mountain bicycle is a 2003 through 2016 model equipped with front disc brakes and a black or silver quick-release (QR) lever on the front wheel hub.
  2. To test for the defect, fully open the front quick-release lever. If the distance between the open lever and the disc brake rotor is less than 6 mm — about the width of a standard #2 pencil — your bicycle is affected.
  3. If your bicycle is affected, stop using it immediately until the repair is completed.
  4. Contact an authorized Rocky Mountain retailer to schedule a free installation of a new, safer quick-release lever on the front wheel.
  5. For assistance, contact Rocky Mountain toll-free at 800-663-2512 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email info@bikes.com, or visit www.bikes.com and click on 'Safety/Recall' at the bottom of the page.
