Summary

Rocky Mountain Bicycles is recalling about 1,300 model year 2018 Altitude, Instinct, and Pipeline mountain bicycles because the brake cable housing was not properly secured during manufacturing. This defect can cause the brakes to fail unexpectedly, which poses a serious crash hazard to the rider. These bicycles were sold in various colors at Rocky Mountain bicycle dealers nationwide between June 2017 and November 2017 for prices ranging from $2,600 to $7,300. Consumers should stop using the bikes immediately and contact an authorized dealer for a free repair.

Risk

The improperly secured brake cable housing can lead to total brake failure during operation. While no injuries have been reported yet, a loss of braking capability significantly increases the risk of a high-impact crash and serious injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop riding the recalled 2018 Altitude, Instinct, or Pipeline mountain bicycle.
  2. Identify your bicycle by checking for the model name on a sticker on the top tube and the brand name 'Rocky Mountain' on the down tube.
  3. Look for the platform family name printed on the rear triangle of the bicycle at the seatstay to confirm it is an Altitude, Instinct, or Pipeline model.
  4. Contact an authorized Rocky Mountain dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair of the brake cable housing.
  5. For assistance, call Rocky Mountain at 866-522-2803 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email info@bikes.com, or visit www.bikes.com and click on 'Safety/Recall' at the bottom of the page.
