Residential Elevators Recalled for Child Entrapment Hazard

Summary

Residential Elevators, Inc. is recalling approximately 31,000 home elevators, including models Easy Rider, Horizon Lift, Luxury Lift, Luxury Lift Hydraulic, Luxury Lift Traction, and RE. Young children can become trapped in the hazardous gap between the exterior landing door and the interior elevator car door or gate. If the elevator is called to another floor while a child is in this space, it can lead to serious injuries or death. One incident has already been reported involving a child who suffered a serious spinal injury. The elevators were sold nationwide from 1986 through July 2022. Residential Elevators, Inc. is providing free space guards and installation assistance to address the safety risk.

Risk

A hazardous gap between the elevator's hoistway door and the interior car door allows children to become trapped. If the elevator moves while a child is in this space, they can be pinned or crushed, resulting in serious injury or death. One child has already suffered a serious spinal injury due to this defect.
