Summary

Approximately 24,000 Remington Mighty Sweep electric leaf blowers (model RM180B) are being recalled because the internal impeller can break and strike the operator. This defect poses a serious laceration hazard, with one reported incident resulting in cuts and bruises. These 7.5 amp black blowers were sold at retailers nationwide and online from May 2011 through December 2013 for between $30 and $40. Consumers should stop using the recalled blowers immediately and contact Remington for a free replacement.

Risk

The blower's internal impeller can shatter during use, causing plastic fragments to be ejected from the housing and strike the operator or bystanders, leading to cuts and bruises.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the stickers on both sides of the leaf blower to confirm it is a Remington Mighty Sweep model RM180B.
  2. Locate the white label on the bottom of the motor housing to verify the item number is 41AA180G983 and the serial number is between S1E131XK0001 and S1E162XK2008.
  3. Examine the manufacturing date within the serial number: the third character (month), fourth and fifth characters (day), and sixth character (last digit of the year) should fall between May 13, 2011 and May 16, 2012.
  4. Immediately stop using any recalled leaf blower.
