Wabash National Corporation: 2009-2024 Dry Van Trailers Recalled for Reduced Rear Impact Protection

Summary

Wabash National Corporation is recalling approximately 3,711 dry van trailers from the model years 2009 through 2024 that are equipped with rail-style lift gates. These trailers have rear impact guards positioned too far forward from the rear of the trailer, which reduces their effectiveness in a collision. Wabash will provide a free extension to the rear impact guard to ensure the vehicles comply with federal safety standards. Owners were notified by mail starting December 4, 2023.

Risk

If a light-duty vehicle crashes into the back of the trailer, the misplaced guard may not provide enough protection to prevent the smaller vehicle from sliding underneath. This significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death for occupants of the passenger vehicle during a rear-end collision.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your trailer's manufacturing records or physical label to see if it is a Wabash dry van trailer from model years 2009 through 2024 equipped with a rail-style lift gate.
  2. Contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5404 to verify if your specific unit is part of the recall (Wabash recall number B23015) and to schedule a free repair.
  3. If your trailer is affected, arrange for an appointment at an authorized dealer to have an extension added to the rear impact guard at no cost to you.
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
