Summary

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling 463,295 diesel-engine vehicles, including the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, 3500; GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500; 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV; and Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. The recall was issued because a defect in the transmission control valve may cause the rear wheels to lock up unexpectedly. To remedy this issue, dealers will install new transmission control module software at no charge and implement a special coverage program for transmissions with identified defective valves.

Risk

A sudden lock-up of the rear wheels while the vehicle is in motion can cause a loss of vehicle control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is included in the recall by checking your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  2. Schedule an appointment with your local dealer to have the new transmission control module software installed free of charge. If the software identifies a defective control valve, the dealer will provide service under the GM special coverage program.
  3. For assistance or to confirm eligibility, contact your vehicle's brand customer service: Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, GMC at 1-800-462-8782, or Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006.
  4. If you have additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
