Summary

Trek has recalled about 19,890 model year 2026 Trek and Electra electric bicycles because the rear wheel bolts can break while in use. If these bolts break, the rear wheel can separate from the bike frame, which can cause the rider to fall. This recall affects various models including the Trek FX+ 1 and FX+ 1S (Stepover and Midstep) and Electra Townie Go! (Step Thru and S Step Thru) sold between April 2025 and October 2025 for about $2,100.

Risk

The original black rear wheel bolts can fail when under tension, causing the motor and wheel assembly to detach from the frame. The firm has received seven reports of these bolts breaking, which poses a serious risk of loss of control and fall injuries to the rider.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop riding the recalled Trek FX+ 1 Midstep, FX+ 1S Midstep, FX+ 1 Stepover, FX+ 1S Stepover, or Electra Townie Go! Step Thru and Townie Go! S Step Thru electric bicycles.
  2. Inspect the rear wheel bolts that connect the motor to the frame; the recalled bolts are black.
  3. Contact an authorized Trek or Electra dealer to schedule a free repair. The dealer will replace the original black bolts with new silver rear wheel bolts.
  4. Locate your nearest authorized dealer using the store finder at https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/store-finder/.
  5. Consumers who participate in the repair will receive a $10 in-store credit valid through December 31, 2026, for Trek, Electra, or Bontrager merchandise.
