Ford Motor Company: F-150 Trucks Recalled for Rear Axle Hub Bolt Breakage

Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling 112,965 of its 2021-2023 F-150 vehicles equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy duty axle. A bolt in the rear axle hub can fatigue and break, causing damage to the axle's internal components. This damage can cause the truck to roll away while parked if the parking brake isn't used or lead to a sudden loss of driving power. Ford dealers will replace the rear axle shaft assemblies on both sides of affected trucks at no cost to owners.

Risk

A broken axle bolt can damage the axle hub splines, which prevents the transmission from holding the vehicle in place when in 'Park.' This can cause the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly or lose power while driving, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected: This recall specifically impacts 2021-2023 Ford F-150 trucks that have the 'Trailer Tow Max Duty' package and a '3/4 float' 9.75-inch heavy duty axle design.
  2. Check your vehicle's recall status by entering your 17-character VIN at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or by contacting a Ford dealer to see if your truck is part of recall number 23S65.
  3. Until your vehicle is repaired, always apply the electronic parking brake whenever you park the vehicle to prevent a potential rollaway.
  4. Contact a Ford or Lincoln dealer to schedule a free repair; dealers will replace both the left and right rear axle shaft assemblies.
  5. For more information or assistance, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
  6. Call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional safety information.
