Summary

Publix is recalling 9,388 units of three different 'Steam in Bag' vegetable products containing cubed butternut squash. These products, which include Butternut Medley, Green Bean Butternut Squash, and Butternut Brussels Pecan, were sold at Publix stores between January 3, 2021, and January 14, 2021. The recall was issued because the butternut squash used in these medleys may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness. No illnesses have been reported to date, and consumers should check their refrigerators or freezers for these items immediately.

Risk

The products may contain Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that can lead to high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In vulnerable populations such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, the infection can be fatal or cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

What You Should Do

  1. Locate the product packaging and check for the following GTIN barcodes: 002-25399-00000 (Butternut Medley), 002-24887-00000 (Green Bean Butternut Squash), or 002-25677-00000 (Butternut Brussels Pecan).
  2. Verify if the product was purchased between the dates of January 3, 2021, and January 14, 2021.
  3. If you have any of these affected products, do not consume them; immediately discard the product or return it to your local Publix store.
  4. Return the affected product to any Publix location to receive a full refund.
  5. For additional questions, contact the FDA Consumer Complaint hotline at 1-888-723-3332 (1-888-SAFEFDA).
