Summary

Approximately 4,900 Airwalk brand self-balancing scooters, commonly known as hoverboards, have been recalled because their lithium-ion battery packs can overheat. This defect can cause the products to smoke, catch fire, or explode. These hoverboards were sold in black or white and feature the "AIRWALK" logo on the front right foot pad. They were sold at The Sports Authority, MC Sports, Academy.com, and DICKS.com between December 2015 and May 2016. Although no incidents have been reported, the firm is no longer in business and the original remedy is no longer available.

Risk

The lithium-ion battery packs inside these scooters can overheat during use or charging, which poses a significant risk of the product catching fire or exploding. This creates a serious fire hazard that could lead to property damage or personal injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your hoverboard for the 'AIRWALK' logo, which is printed on the front right foot pad.
  2. Verify if your scooter is black or white and was purchased from The Sports Authority, MC Sports, Academy.com, or DICKS.com between December 2015 and May 2016.
  3. Stop using the recalled hoverboard immediately due to the fire and explosion risk.
  4. Because the manufacturer, PTX Performance Products, is no longer in business, a repair or refund remedy is no longer available from the company.
  5. Dispose of the hoverboard and its lithium-ion battery in accordance with your local hazardous waste disposal regulations. Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling bin.
  6. For additional questions or to report an incident, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
