Summary

Profile Design is recalling about 9,700 Cobra S carbon-wrapped black handlebar stems because they can corrode and break while in use. The firm has received at least 10 reports of these stems breaking, including one report of an injury where a rider lost control after the stem failed. These stems were sold individually and as original equipment on specific bicycle models from Kestrel, Fuji, Jamis, and Scott between January 2007 and December 2013. Consumers should immediately stop using bicycles equipped with these stems and contact Profile Design for a free replacement.

Risk

The handlebar stems can corrode and snap unexpectedly, causing the rider to lose steering control and crash. This hazard has already resulted in at least one reported injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using any bicycle equipped with the black Profile Design Cobra S carbon-wrapped handlebar stem.
  2. Check your handlebar stem for the words 'Profile Design' and 'Cobra S' printed in white on the side of the black stem to identify if it is part of the recall.
  3. Identify if your bicycle is one of the affected models: 2009-2010 Kestrel Talon SL Tri Ultegra, Evoke SL, Airfoil Pro SL, Talon SL, Talon Tri-Force, Talon Road SL, or 4000 SL; 2009-2010 Fuji D-6 Pro or D-6 Matt Reed; 2010 Jamis Xenith T2; or 2008-2010 Scott CR1 Plasma LTD (model# 209562) and Plasma Premium (models #212052, #215722).
  4. Verify the stem length if possible; recalled stems were sold in 60 mm, 70 mm, 80 mm, 90 mm, 100 mm, 110 mm, and 120 mm sizes.
  5. Contact Profile Design toll-free at 888-800-5999 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or online at www.profile-design.com (click on 'Recall Notices') for instructions on receiving a free replacement stem.
