Summary

Prestone Products is recalling about 4.1 million units of its Windshield De-Icer (SKU AS-246) and Ice & Frost Shield (SKU AS-247) because the trigger spray assemblies are not child-resistant. The bottles contain hazardous chemicals, including methanol and ethylene glycol, which children can access by twisting off the spray top. These products were sold in 32-ounce clear yellow plastic bottles at retailers like AutoZone, Walmart, and Amazon between September 2011 and August 2015 for about $3 to $11. Prestone is providing free replacement trigger assemblies to fix the issue.

Risk

Children can easily remove the spray nozzle from the bottle, exposing them to methanol and ethylene glycol. These chemicals pose a severe risk of poisoning if swallowed or absorbed. No injuries have been reported.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your garage or vehicle for 32-ounce clear yellow plastic bottles of Prestone Windshield De-Icer (SKU AS-246) or Prestone Ice & Frost Shield (SKU AS-247). The SKU number is printed on the bottom left of the back label.
  2. Inspect the bottle to see if the trigger assembly can be removed by twisting the neck shroud counter-clockwise. If it can be removed, the product is part of this recall.
  3. Immediately move any affected bottles to a high location that is completely out of the reach and sight of children.
  4. Contact the Prestone information center at 800-890-2075 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.prestone.com and click on 'De-Icer and Frost Shield Recall' to receive a free replacement trigger assembly that cannot be removed once installed.
  5. For more information, you can call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.

Your Remedy Options

📋Replace

Always keep all products that contain hazardous chemicals out of reach and sight of children. Consumers should inspect the bottle to see if the trigger assembly can be removed by twisting the neck shroud counter-clockwise. If the trigger assembly can be removed, consumers should contact Prestone to receive a new replacement trigger assembly that, once engaged, cannot be removed.
