Summary

Platinum Health has recalled about 53,000 LumaRail Adult Portable Bed Rails due to a design that allows users to become trapped. This recall includes the Bed Assist Rail with Legs (model PHB4000), the Free Standing Bed Assist Rail (model PHB6000), and the DoubleSafe Bed Assist Rail (model PHB7000D). One death has been reported involving an 81-year-old man who died from positional asphyxia after becoming trapped between his mattress and the bed rail. Consumers should immediately stop using these rails and contact Platinum Health for a free repair kit, or a replacement rail for model PHB7000D if used on twin beds.

Risk

Users can become entrapped within the bed rail frame or stuck in the gap between the bed rail and the side of the mattress. This poses a serious hazard of suffocation and death by positional asphyxia. One fatal incident has already been reported.
