Forest River, Inc.: 2024 Cardinal and Wildcat Fifth Wheels Recalled for Hitch Separation Risk

Summary

Forest River, Inc. is recalling approximately 100 of its 2024 Cardinal and Wildcat Fifth Wheel trailers because the hitch pin box may separate from the vehicle during travel. This issue occurs if an operator uses the rear towing hitch without first locking the turning point fifth wheel hitch into the required 'Conventional Transport' position. Owners can take their trailer to a dealer to have free warning labels installed on the hitch and the rear wall of the vehicle to ensure safe operation.

Risk

If the trailer is towed while the hitch is in the incorrect position, the upper front structure of the trailer can break. This can cause the pin box to completely separate from the vehicle while in motion, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your trailer is affected by checking if it is a 2024 Forest River Cardinal or Wildcat Fifth Wheel trailer.
  2. Check your records or the vehicle for Forest River recall number 15-1755.
  3. Contact Forest River Customer Service at 1-574-296-7700 to schedule a free appointment with an authorized dealer.
  4. At the appointment, dealers will install mandatory warning labels on the hitch and the rear wall of the vehicle at no cost to you.
  5. Ensure you always lock the turning point fifth wheel hitch into the 'Conventional Transport' position before utilizing the rear towing hitch.
  6. For additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
