Philips Lighting Recalls Metal Halide Lamps Due to Burn and Laceration Hazards

Summary

Philips is recalling approximately 87,000 Energy Advantage Ceramic Metal Halide Lamps (model CDM330) because the outer bulbs can shatter. If the bulb breaks, hot pieces of internal glass can fall from the lamp, potentially causing burns or cuts. The firm has received two reports of these lamps shattering, though no injuries have been reported. These 330W lamps were sold in both clear and coated versions and were primarily used in industrial and commercial spaces with high ceilings.

Risk

The outer glass bulb can unexpectedly shatter while in use, allowing extremely hot internal glass fragments to fall onto people or objects below. This creates a significant risk of thermal burns and lacerations.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify your lamp by checking the etching located at either the base of the lamp or on the bulb's glass. Look for model 'CDM330' and a wattage of '330W'.
  2. Verify the date code in the etching. Affected lamps have one of the following codes: 1E (May 2011), 1F (June 2011), 1G (July 2011), 1H (August 2011), 1J (September 2011), 1K (October 2011), 1L (November 2011), or 1M (December 2011).
  3. Immediately stop using any lamps that match these model and date codes.
  4. Contact Philips Lighting toll-free at 866-253-5503 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or via email at ceramicmh@philips.com to receive a free replacement lamp.
  5. You can also visit www.philips.com and click on 'For Professionals' then 'Recalls' for additional information.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have further questions regarding this recall.
