Summary

Specialized Bicycle Components is recalling about 6,500 Specialized Body Geometry Pedal Axle Extenders sold between January 2009 and June 2015 for about $40. These stainless steel extenders, used to increase the outward reach of bicycle pedals, can unexpectedly break during use. There have been 10 reports of these components breaking, including two incidents resulting in minor scrapes and bruises. Consumers should immediately stop using these extenders and return them to an authorized Specialized retailer for a full refund.

Risk

The pedal axle extenders can break under the stress of riding, which causes the rider to lose control of the bicycle. This defect creates a significant fall hazard that has already resulted in reports of minor injuries.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using any bicycle equipped with the recalled Specialized Body Geometry Pedal Axle Extenders.
  2. Check your bicycle's crank arms for the extenders; they are made of stainless steel, fit a 9/16 inch pedal thread, and are stamped with an 'L' (Left) and an 'R' (Right).
  3. Return the recalled pedal axle extenders to any authorized Specialized retailer to receive a full refund.
  4. Contact Specialized at 800-722-4423 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit www.specialized.com and click on the 'Safety Notices' link under the Support column for more information.
