Summary

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling approximately 670 of its 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles because the high voltage battery cell modules may have misaligned electrodes. This manufacturing defect can cause the battery to catch fire while the vehicle is being driven or while it is parked. To address this safety risk, authorized dealers will replace the affected battery cell modules free of charge.

Risk

The battery can catch fire while driving or while the vehicle is parked, which significantly increases the risk of injury. Because of the fire risk, owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the recall repair has been performed.

What You Should Do

  1. This recall affects approximately 670 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 and 2024 model years that may contain defective high voltage battery modules.
  2. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage due to fire risk.
  3. Identify if your specific vehicle is included in this recall by entering your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the search tool at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
  4. Until the recall repair is finished, park the vehicle outside immediately after charging, do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight, avoid using Level 3 DC chargers, and limit the maximum battery charge to 80%.
  5. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer to schedule a free replacement of the high voltage battery cell modules.
  6. Contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 93EW for more information.
  7. Call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional safety information.
