Summary

Paradise Valley Market, Inc. (doing business as Carnival Supermarket) is recalling approximately 35 pounds of lean and extra lean ground beef because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The ground beef was sold only on September 1, 2016, at the meat counter of the Carnival Supermarket in Chula Vista, California. While no illnesses have been confirmed, officials are concerned that consumers may still have these products in their freezers. If you have this beef, return it to the store for a refund or throw it away.

Risk

The beef may contain E. coli O157:H7, a bacterium that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration. In some cases, particularly in young children and older adults, it can lead to a serious type of kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

What You Should Do

  1. Check your freezer for 15% lean or 7% extra lean ground beef purchased from the Carnival Supermarket meat counter at 870 3rd Avenue, Chula Vista, Calif. on September 1, 2016.
  2. Identify the product by its packaging: it was sold to order in reddish plastic bags tied with a knot at the top.
  3. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund, throw it away, or contact the manufacturer for further instructions.
  4. Wash your hands, cutting boards, dishes, and utensils with warm, soapy water after any contact with raw meat.
  5. If you have questions about the recall, contact Sandy Young, Vice President of J. Walcher Communications, at (619) 295-7140.
  6. Call the USDA Meat & Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 if you have additional food safety questions.
