Summary

Panasonic is recalling about 387 six-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs sold with Panasonic CF-S10 Series laptop computers. Conductive foreign material was mixed into the battery cells during manufacturing, which can cause the battery to overheat and catch fire. These laptops were sold by Panasonic dealers from December 2011 through August 2013 for approximately $2,000. Panasonic is providing free replacement battery packs to affected consumers.

Risk

The presence of foreign material in the battery cells can cause an internal short circuit, leading to overheating and a fire. While no incidents or injuries have been reported, the defect poses a significant fire hazard during use or charging.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your laptop to see if it is a Panasonic CF-S10 Series; the model name is printed on the surface of the laptop on the left side below the keyboard.
  2. If you have a CF-S10 Series laptop, remove the battery pack and check the nameplate for model numbers CF-VZSU61U or CF-VZSU61R.
  3. Verify the lot number on the battery pack nameplate; for model CF-VZSU61U, the recalled lot numbers are BAW, BBX, BC, C1, and C2.
  4. Immediately stop using the laptop with the recalled battery, power off the device, and remove the battery pack.
  5. Contact Panasonic toll-free at 855-772-8324 anytime or visit www.panasonic.com and click on 'Product Recall' to request a free replacement battery pack.
