Summary

PackTite is recalling about 9,000 bed bug heating units because they can overheat and melt during use. There have been three reports of these units overheating and melting, including one incident where items inside the bag were singed. The recall includes white heaters sold as part of the PackTite original bed bug treatment system, which features a black canvas bag measuring 36 by 19 by 24 inches. Consumers who have these units should stop using them immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free replacement heater.

Risk

The internal components of the heating unit can reach temperatures high enough to melt the heater's plastic casing, creating a significant risk of fire and property damage.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled PackTite bed bug heating unit.
  2. Check the heater casing to see if it is affected: recalled models have NO visible text on the top-facing side of the white heater casing. If the heater has reset instructions on the underside but no text on the top, it is part of the recall.
  3. Verify if the system was purchased between October 2009 and January 2013 from retailers such as Pest control companies, Grainger, Orkin, or online at Do My Own Pest Control and US Bedbugs.
  4. Contact PackTite to receive a free replacement heater by calling toll-free at (866) 520-7952 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MT, emailing recall@packtite.com, or visiting www.packtite.com and clicking on 'Product Recall'.
  5. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
