PL Custom Emergency Vehicles: 2020-2024 Ambulance and Rescue Vehicles Recalled for Fire Risk

Summary

PL Custom Emergency Vehicles is recalling approximately 39 Type 1 and Type 3 Ambulance & Rescue vehicles from model years 2020 through 2024. A software error in the vehicle's electrical control system (multiplex system) can prevent the system from shutting off power during a wiring failure or short circuit. This defect can lead to overloaded electrical circuits that overheat and catch fire. Dealers will perform a free firmware update to correct the issue.

Risk

A flaw in the vehicle's firmware prevents the system from properly cutting power to specific electrical pins during a failure. This causes the electrical circuits to draw too much power and overheat, which can ignite surrounding materials and lead to a vehicle fire.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking if it is a PL Custom Emergency Vehicles Type 1 or Type 3 Ambulance & Rescue vehicle manufactured between 2020 and 2024.
  2. Contact PL Custom customer service at 1-732-223-1411 to confirm if your specific unit is part of this recall and to schedule a repair.
  3. Bring your vehicle to an authorized dealer to receive a free firmware update for the vehicle multiplex system.
  4. If you have additional questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
