ORTOVOX Recalls Avalanche Transceiver Due to Loss of Emergency Communications Capability

Summary

ORTOVOX is recalling about 3,000 S1+ Avalanche Transceivers because the internal hardware can fail, preventing the device from transmitting a signal to rescuers during an emergency. This failure can occur even if the device appears to be powered on and working correctly. These black and green beacons were sold at outdoor specialty retailers and ski shops nationwide between July 2010 and April 2015 for approximately $490. Consumers should immediately stop using these devices and return them to ORTOVOX for a free repair.

Risk

The device's internal hardware may fail, making it impossible for rescuers to locate a buried individual in an emergency situation. Although no injuries have been reported, a failure to transmit a signal during an avalanche burial significantly increases the risk of death.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your device for the 'ORTOVOX' and 'S1+' labels printed on the top to confirm it is the recalled model.
  2. Verify the manufacture date by looking inside the battery door on the back of the transceiver; all units manufactured from 2010 through 2014 are affected. The date is shown as a Roman numeral (quarter) and a two-digit year.
  3. Immediately stop using the recalled S1+ transceiver for any back-country or avalanche-risk activities.
  4. Contact Deuter USA (the U.S. importer) at 877-384-9252 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, or email ortovox.warranty@deuterusa.com to arrange for a free repair.
  5. You can also visit ortovox.com and click on the 'S1+ Avalanche Transceiver Recall' box for additional instructions and shipping information.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this or any other consumer product safety recall.
