Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 4,803 BMW Dealer Service Part Oil Filters (part number 11427721779-04) designed for high-performance S1000RR, M1000RR, M1000R, M1000XR, and HP4 Race motorcycles. Engine vibrations from these high-revving four-cylinder engines can cause the oil filter to vibrate loose and unscrew while the motorcycle is being ridden. Authorized BMW dealers will inspect and replace the oil filter as necessary, free of charge.

Risk

If the oil filter becomes loose or detached, engine oil can leak onto the road surface or the motorcycle's rear tire, leading to a sudden loss of traction and significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your motorcycle's service records or the oil filter itself to see if it is part number 11427721779-04, specifically for BMW S1000RR, M1000RR/R/XR, or HP4 Race models.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer to schedule a free inspection and potential replacement of the oil filter.
  3. If you have questions, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or your local authorized BMW dealer.
  4. Dealers will inspect and replace the oil filter as necessary, free of charge.
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
