Summary

Nautilus Inc. is recalling about 17,000 pairs of Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells because the weight selector dial can fail. This defect can cause heavy weight plates to fall unexpectedly when the dumbbell is lifted from its cradle, posing a significant injury hazard. There have been 16 reports of the selector dial failing, including three reports of injuries to the user's foot or leg. These black steel dumbbells were sold at sporting goods stores and online at Nautilus.com and other retailers between May 2011 and August 2011 for approximately $600.

Risk

The weight selector dial can malfunction and fail to secure the weight plates, causing them to fall off the handle during use or when lifted. This can lead to serious impact injuries, such as broken bones or bruising to the user's feet and legs.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your dumbbells for the word 'BOWFLEX' written in grey along the top of the handle and a selector dial on each end with weights listed in red from 10 to 90 pounds.
  2. Locate the serial number on the white label on the bottom of the cradle; to do this safely, lift the dumbbell from the cradle with all weights attached before turning over the base.
  3. Check the serial number for the four-digit date-of-manufacture code following the letters 'MAG'. If this code is in the range of 1111 through 1136, your product is affected.
  4. Examine the inside portion of the weight selector dial; if there is a black dot present, your dumbbells are NOT affected by this recall.
  5. If your dumbbells are affected, stop using them immediately and contact Nautilus at (800) 416-7271 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit www.bowflex.com to receive a free repair kit.
  6. For additional questions or to report a safety concern, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
