Summary

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 70,167 trucks, including certain 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia, 2020-2023 Western Star 49X, 2021-2023 Western Star 47X, and 2022 Freightliner 114SD vehicles. The brake modulator valves on the front axle can corrode, which may cause the vehicle to pull suddenly to one side during braking events initiated by the Electronic Stability Control or Roll Stability Control systems. Dealers will inspect the valves and replace them if necessary, and some vehicles will receive a software update to alert the driver when a replacement is needed. All repairs are provided free of charge.

Risk

Corrosion in the front brake modulator valves can cause the brakes to apply unevenly, resulting in a sudden change in vehicle direction that increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your make, model, and year against the following list: 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia, 2020-2023 Western Star 49X, 2021-2023 Western Star 47X, or 2022 Freightliner 114SD.

  3. Schedule an appointment with an authorized dealer to have the front brake modulator valves inspected and replaced if necessary at no cost to you.
  4. Pay attention to any new dashboard alerts if your vehicle receives the software update, as this update is designed to notify you when a valve replacement is required.
  5. For additional questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
