Summary

Microsoft has recalled approximately 2.25 million AC power cords sold with Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 computers, as well as accessory power supply units sold before March 15, 2015. These power cords can overheat, with 56 reports of cords emitting flames and five reports of electrical shock to consumers. Affected Surface Pro and Pro 2 models feature a black case, while Surface Pro 3 models have a silver case with 'Windows 8 Pro' under the kickstand. Microsoft is providing free replacement AC power cords to all affected customers.

Risk

The power cords can overheat during use, causing the material to melt or emit flames, which presents a significant risk of fire and electrical shock to the user.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled AC power cord and unplug it from the wall outlet and your device.
  2. Identify your device: check for a Microsoft Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2 with a black case, or a Surface Pro 3 with a silver case and 'Windows 8 Pro' under the kickstand.
  3. Check your power cord: the recalled cords connect to the power supply brick and do NOT have a 1/8-inch plastic sleeve (strain relief) at the end that plugs into the power brick.
  4. Contact Microsoft to request a free replacement AC power cord by calling toll-free at 855-327-7780 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or online at www.microsoft.com (click Support, then Surface Support, then All Surface Support, then look for Power Cords information).
  5. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
