Summary

Mammut Sports Group is recalling about 5,580 Alugator Ride 3.0 Hoe and Alugator Ride SE avalanche shovels. These silver or black aluminum shovels with orange handles were sold individually or as part of Barryvox emergency rescue packages between December 2022 and February 2023. The spring locking mechanism that connects the shovel head to the shaft can fail during use, and while no injuries have been reported, consumers are urged to stop using them and inspect the locking mechanism immediately.

Risk

The spring locking mechanism on these shovels can fail during emergency excavation of a person buried by an avalanche. If the shovel fails during a rescue, it could delay the excavation, posing a significant risk of injury or death to the buried individual.

What You Should Do

  1. The recalled products are Mammut Alugator Ride 3.0 Hoe and Alugator Ride SE avalanche shovels, which feature aluminum heads in silver or black and orange handles.
  2. Check the shovel shaft near the handle for the production lot number; the Alugator Ride 3.0 Hoe is affected if it has lot number 1121, and the Alugator Ride SE is affected if it has lot numbers 1221 or 0322.
  3. Immediately stop using any shovel identified with these lot numbers.
  4. Follow the inspection instructions at https://mammut.prezly.com/recall-notice-for-a-call-for-inspection-shovel-locking-mechanism to test if the connection between the shaft and shovel head locks properly into position.
  5. If the shovel head does not lock securely, contact Mammut Sports Group at 800-451-5127 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or email warranty.usa@mammut.com to receive a prepaid shipping label for a free repair or a free replacement shovel.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for additional information regarding this recall.
