Summary

Makita is recalling about 450 circular saws (Model 5057KB) because the lower blade guard can fail and leave the cutting blade exposed. This defect creates a serious risk of deep cuts and other injuries to anyone using the tool. These blue-green saws were sold at Tools Plus, Amazon.com, and other industrial suppliers between March 2016 and September 2016 for approximately $400. Makita will provide a free repair for all affected units.

Risk

The lower blade guard can malfunction and fail to close, exposing the sharp, rotating blade during or after use. This poses a significant laceration hazard and risk of serious injury to the consumer's hands or body.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the black nameplate on your Makita circular saw, located under the 'Makita' brand name, to see if the model number is 5057KB.
  2. If you have model 5057KB, check the serial number on the same nameplate to see if it falls within these ranges: 12638-12737, 12978-13027, 13208-13257, 13322-13351, 13376-13405, 13578-13627, 13658-13707, or 13900-13979.
  3. Immediately stop using any circular saw that matches the model and serial numbers listed above.
  4. Contact Makita U.S.A. at 800-462-5482 from 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.makitatools.com to schedule a free repair.
  5. For additional questions, you may contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
