Daimler Trucks North America, LLC: Thomas Built Buses Recalled for Steering Loss and Tie Rod Separation

Summary

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 27 school buses, including 2024-2025 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 and 2025 Thomas Built Buses Safe-T-Liner EFX models. The front axle tie rod ball joint studs on these vehicles may crack and break, potentially causing the tie rod to separate from the steering system. Dealers will replace the tie rod assembly in affected buses free of charge to resolve the safety defect.

Risk

The tie rod is a critical steering component; if it separates, the driver may experience a sudden and complete loss of steering control. This significantly increases the risk of a crash for the bus occupants and other road users.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's model and year to see if you have a 2024-2025 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 or a 2025 Thomas Built Buses Safe-T-Liner EFX.
  2. Contact Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) customer service at 800-745-8000 to verify if your specific bus is included in this recall (reference recall number D24R6).
  3. If your vehicle is affected, schedule an appointment with an authorized dealer to have the tie rod assembly replaced free of charge.
