Summary

Meritor, Inc. is recalling 475 replacement tie rod assemblies equipped with USK ball studs. These tie rods, which are critical steering components, may contain ball studs that were incorrectly heat-treated during manufacturing, causing them to be brittle. This defect can lead to the tie rods breaking unexpectedly, resulting in a sudden and complete loss of vehicle steering control. Meritor is offering free inspections and replacements through authorized dealers to address this safety issue.

Risk

The incorrectly heat-treated ball studs can snap while the vehicle is in motion, causing the tie rod to fail and the driver to lose the ability to steer the vehicle. This loss of control significantly increases the risk of a serious crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle service records to see if you have recently purchased or installed Meritor replacement tie rods with part numbers A1-3102F4738, A1-3102E4737, or A1-3102P4748.
  2. If you have one of these affected tie rods installed, contact Meritor customer service at 1-866-668-7221 to locate an authorized dealer for an inspection.
  3. Take your vehicle to an authorized dealer who will inspect the tie rods and replace any affected components free of charge.
  4. For additional information or questions regarding this recall, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
