Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling approximately 1,075 of its 2024 Sportage vehicles because the circuit board in the power steering assembly may short circuit. This defect can lead to a sudden loss of power steering assist while driving. Kia dealers will replace the motor-driven power steering electric power pack with a new one at no cost to the owner.

Risk

A sudden loss of power steering assist requires the driver to use significantly more physical effort to steer the vehicle, especially at lower speeds, which increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is affected by looking for your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and contacting your local Kia dealer, or by calling Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and mentioning recall number SC319.
  2. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Kia dealer to have the motor-driven power steering electric power pack replaced free of charge.
  3. If you experience a sudden increase in steering effort while driving, safely pull over and contact roadside assistance or your dealer.
  4. For further information or to check your VIN online, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  5. Contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) if you have additional questions regarding this safety recall.
